Chapter 1 - The Sound of the Shell
“Where am I? Where are the grownups!?”
Perspective: Piggy

Dear Diary,
I am on an island. Or that’s what the other bays and I think this is. It’s got lots of dark forest type are. There is also a lagoon. There looks to be a coral reef out in the sea but in not sure. There is a long indent in the trees where the plane crashed. It is in the forest though. There are many intricacies on the island. I am on this island because of a plane crash. While I was flying there were some problems and we crashed on this island.

The first boy I met was Ralph. He didn’t seem very interested in anything about me at first. But he has become nicer to me. When I told him my nick name was Piggy he laughed. I told him I didn’t want anyone to call me that but he has already told all the boys on the island. At least he somewhat said sorry. There is also another person I met. His name is Jack. I don’t really like Jack, and I don’t think Jack likes me much either. I think he is full of enormity. He called me fatty. The choir has togs. They looked fancy each in a uniform. Jack is the leader of the choir.

I am worried because I think that all the adults have died. They must have died in the plane crash. Ralph is excited about this, but I am kind of worried.

While Ralph and I were at a small beach pool we found a conch shell. We picked it up. I knew that this conch could make noise if you blew into it. I told Ralph about the shell, I also told him why I couldn’t blow into the shell because of my asthma. We found a platform shortly after that, which was made of palm fronds. Where we got there Ralph started to blow on the conch. A sound came out of the conch, it was very loud. We wanted to call the other boys that were alive to the platform so that we could have a meeting about what was going on. The conch because of the loud sound that called all the boys made Ralph seem superior. The conch put a kind of glamour over the boys that were called by it. I think the conch Is a very powerful tool that can call everyone together.

The choir has a job. This new job is hunting. I’m not quite sure how I feel about the boys in the choir right now. But I do know that I don’t like Jack very much who is the choir’s leader.

I think I would be a good leader. I was with Ralph when he found the conch. I was also the one who found out everyone’s names. I am also very observant. But I guess if it couldn’t be me as leader I would like for it to be Ralph because he isn’t as mean as Jack.
